Off-plan properties
Planning a flight through Bangkok, it is important to know in advance how the country's main airport, Suvarnabhumi (BKK), is organised. All the main processes are concentrated here: check-in, passport control, baggage claim, and transport to the city. The airport also offers convenient transfer options, shops, restaurants and lounges to make waiting time comfortable. To ensure your departure or arrival goes smoothly without unnecessary delays, it is worth familiarising yourself with Suvarnabhumi's infrastructure and services in advance.
Suvarnabhumi is located about 25–30 kilometres east of central Bangkok. The distance is not great, but the Thai capital's famous traffic jams can turn a half-hour drive into a two-hour ordeal.
Airport Rail Link (ARL) is a convenient option for those travelling light or wanting to save money. The station is on the basement level. City Line trains run every 10–15 minutes from 5:30 AM to midnight. Fares to city stations range from 15 to 45 baht. The journey to the terminal station Phaya Thai (from where you can transfer to the BTS Skytrain) takes about 30 minutes. There used to be a separate Express Line, but it is currently suspended, so all passengers take the stopping service.
Taxis or ride-hailing suit those with lots of luggage, small children, or simply no desire to deal with transfers. Official taxi stands are on Level 1. A trip to the city centre usually costs 300–500 baht, including the airport's 50-baht service fee and possible highway tolls. The main drawback is traffic jams. The plus side is that you will be driven directly to your hotel door. An alternative to traditional taxis is the Grab app with fixed prices.
Buses are a budget-friendly but not the most convenient option. For example, bus S1 will take you to Khao San Road for 60 baht. However, signage is in Thai, the need to pay only in cash, and traffic jams can create extra hassle. If your destination is not Bangkok but, say, Pattaya, you first need to get to the bus terminal (Public Transportation Center). Free shuttle buses run there 24/7 from Level 1 at exits 1, 3, 8 and 10.
Suvarnabhumi has two passenger terminals. The Main Terminal is a huge building covering over 560,000 square metres, where all the main processes take place: check-in, passport control and baggage claim. In 2023, it was joined by the SAT-1 satellite, which significantly increased capacity and is mainly used for international flights.
Navigating the Main Terminal is quite straightforward if you remember the floor distribution:
You can spend several hours comfortably at the airport, even if you have a long layover or arrive late at night.
A trip to Thailand begins with your first step at Suvarnabhumi Airport. And if that step is thought out in advance, the whole journey will be remembered only for sunny smiles and vivid impressions.
