U-Tapao Airport (Pattaya): what you need to know before you fly

U-Tapao has long stayed in the shadow of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi, but things have changed in recent years. Charter flights from Russia, Kazakhstan, and China now land here, while domestic routes connect Pattaya to Samui, Phuket, and Chiang Mai. The airport is compact, no crowds at duty-free, no long walks between gates. Still, there are a few things worth knowing before you arrive or depart.

Contact Information:

U-Tapao Airport is located about 30 kilometers from Pattaya and is officially called U-Tapao Rayong–Pattaya International Airport. It handles both domestic and international flights.

Key information for passengers:

  • Address
    Rayong, Ban Chang District, Thailand
  • Airport code
    UTP
  • Official website
    utapao.com
  • Information desk phone
    +66 (0)38 245 595

It is recommended to check your flight status on the official website or with your airline, as schedules can change depending on the season.

How to Get to the Airport

The distance from Pattaya to U-Tapao is 40–45 kilometers. A clear road takes 40–50 minutes. Traffic jams occur on Sukhumvit Road around Jomtien and Na Jomtien, especially from 5 PM to 7 PM.

  • Taxi. The most predictable option. Fixed price from Pattaya: 600–800 baht. Do not hail a taxi on the street — book through Grab, Bolt, or your hotel reception. Drivers at taxi stands may inflate the price to 1000–1200 baht.
  • Shuttle bus. Departs from the bus terminal on North Pattaya Road (landmark — Central Marina). A ticket costs about 150 baht. The downside: the bus runs every 1–2 hours, and the schedule is not always stable. Check the departure time on the day of travel at a tourist office or at the terminal.
  • Hotel transfer. Many hotels and condominiums offer a transfer for an extra fee. The price is usually 800–1000 baht, but you get a car exactly at the booked time. Convenient for night or early morning flights.

Airport Terminal

There is one terminal, and it is small. That is a plus: from the entrance to the boarding gate takes 5–7 minutes on foot. No connecting trains or shuttles inside the airport.

  • Departures are on the second floor. First you go through check-in counters, then passport control and a small duty-free area. The waiting area has several gates, a café, and small shops. Seats are limited, and it can get crowded during peak hours.
  • Arrivals are on the first floor. Here you will find taxi drivers with signs, car rental desks, and currency exchange booths. The exchange rate inside the airport is poor — exchange only the bare minimum for immediate needs.

Important detail: air conditioners run at full power. Even in the hot season, the terminal is cool, especially in the morning and evening. A light jacket or scarf will not hurt.

Services and Amenities

  • Cafés. Before passport control, there is a small café with sandwiches, coffee, and rice dishes. After passport control, one café with a limited selection. Prices are 20-30 percent higher than in the city.
  • Free Wi-Fi. Works throughout the terminal. To connect, you need a phone number (a Russian number works as well, with the country code).
  • Shops. One duty-free shop before boarding. The assortment is modest: alcohol, cigarettes, cosmetics, souvenirs. Do not expect luxury shopping.
  • Luggage storage. Available, open 24/7. Cost is about 100 baht per bag per day.
  • ATMs and currency exchange. Several ATMs in arrivals and departures. Exchange booths offer worse rates than in Pattaya. It is better to withdraw cash from an ATM — a 220 baht fee per transaction.
  • Mother and child room. Located near the restrooms in the departures area. Has a changing table and a sink.

Tips for Travelers

It is best to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours before departure. This allows enough time to complete all formalities, especially during the high tourist season.

For departures from U-Tapao, it is advisable to have some Thai baht on hand, as not all establishments accept cards.

If you plan to use a transfer service, book in advance. Availability of vehicles can be limited in the evening.

First-time visitors to Pattaya may benefit from airport meet-and-greet services. This helps avoid transport issues and saves time.

Travelers with children should note that the airport has limited entertainment options, so it is better to prepare everything needed for a comfortable wait.

When planning a trip to Thailand, it is important to consider not only flights but also opportunities for investment and comfortable living.
