Documents on Bali Before You Fly

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the day you land. Airlines often verify that you have an onward or return ticket before boarding.

Visa choice

Usually, people either pick up a VOA at the airport or sort an e-VOA online. It permits a 30-day stay and is typically extendable once for an additional 30 days. Submit it through the official immigration portal — passport biodata page, photo, contact details, then card payment.

New arrival form

In late September/October 2025, Indonesia started using a nationwide “All Indonesia” digital arrival card — everything in a single QR at entry. It’s free and should be completed within three days before your scheduled arrival. This process is replacing airport-specific forms across the country.

Bali tourist levy

Bali charges a 150,000 IDR levy per visit to support culture and the environment. Make the payment on the official Love Bali platform (site or app) and keep the QR code with you. Payment at the airport is also available, but it’s usually slower.

Picking the right status for your stay

Short holidays (30–60 days)

VOA/e-VOA suits tourism, short business meetings, and transit. Have your lodging info ready to show; they sometimes check the address.

Longer stays without working

Several limited-stay options are processed online and issued as an e-KITAS after entry:

  • Retirement visa/KITAS. For older travelers (minimum age and financial criteria apply). A licensed agency sponsor is usually required, and you’ll need proof of income and insurance. Requirements are updated periodically — check the nearest Indonesian mission for current age and financial thresholds before applying.
  • Second Home visa. A long-term, no-work option tied to proof of substantial funds or qualifying property/term deposit. It’s multi-year and does not require a local sponsor.
  • Golden Visa (investor/talent). For individuals or companies meeting significant investment or talent criteria, typically providing 5- or 10-year residence. Launched nationally in 2024 and refined thereafter.

Tip: Whatever your pathway, start at evisa.imigrasi.go.id and follow the official checklists. Agents can help, but the immigration portal is the authority.

Driving documents in Bali

To ride or drive legally, have both your local license and an IDP covering the vehicle you’ll use. Police checkpoints are common, and an accident without the proper permit can void coverage.

Money, health, and other practicalities

  • Cash declarations. Indonesia sets a threshold for rupiah cash; beyond that, a declaration is required. If you’re carrying large sums, verify the latest thresholds.
  • Customs and restricted items. Use the customs section of the All Indonesia card. If you’ll bring drones, professional camera gear, or tobacco/alcohol above allowances, declare them to avoid fines or confiscation.
  • Insurance. Travel medical insurance isn’t checked at every step, but it’s strongly recommended. Many hospitals require proof of coverage or up-front payment.

Families, remote workers, and business travelers

Families

If a minor’s surname differs from a parent’s, carry the birth certificate. When a child travels with one parent or a guardian, bring notarized consent. Airlines can be strict.

Remote workers

There is no single “digital nomad visa” covering all paid activity. Working for an Indonesian entity or earning locally requires the appropriate work visa/KITAS. If you’re simply vacationing while working for a foreign employer, stay within the activities allowed by your entry status and avoid local employment.

For edge cases, consult a qualified visa professional.

Business visitors

Short meetings and negotiations are generally covered by VOA/e-VOA. Anything resembling active work in Indonesia usually requires a limited-stay work permit. Confirm the correct visa code before departure.

How the airport flow looks now

  1. Show your passport and onward ticket at check-in.
  2. Present your All Indonesia QR.
  3. If needed, pay VOA first, then proceed to immigration.
  4. Scan your Love Bali levy QR.
  5. Collect baggage and show the customs QR if requested.
  6. Show the QR if it is requested.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend the VOA to 60 days?

Yes. In most cases you can extend once for an additional 30 days. Start early to avoid overstaying and fines.

Do I need to use the All Indonesia app/website?

Yes. International arrivals are expected to use it from late 2025 onward. Complete it within three days before arrival for a smooth QR scan.

Where do I pay the Bali levy?

Preferably on the official Love Bali site/app. Paying on arrival is possible but slower.

Do I really need an IDP for a scooter?

Yes. It’s legally required and tied to insurance validity.
