Most of the work of moving to Bali with children happens before you leave. The longest item on the list is paperwork for the child, not shipping or housing, and it is the one people start last.
Documents that need issuing at home, apostilles, translations, school records and a permit that depends on a parent's status all run on external timetables. None of them can be compressed once you have booked a flight.
Below is the sequence that works, what each step depends on, and where families lose months. Requirements differ by nationality and change, so confirm your own list with the relevant consulate and a local lawyer before acting.

The school year is the one date that cannot move. Everything else is arranged backwards from it, which is why the flight is the last decision rather than the first.
A child's permission to stay is normally dependent on a parent who holds a sponsored permit. That makes the adult's arrangements the gate for everything else, including school enrolment at institutions that report on their student body.
So the order is the parent's route, then the child's application. Reversing it means discovering in August that the child's paperwork cannot start yet. This is the part that takes months and cannot be done from the island. Start it before anything else, because everything downstream waits on it:
Order two certified copies of each document rather than one. Different offices keep the original, and reissuing an apostille from abroad is slow and expensive.
For separated parents this is the single most common cause of a failed departure. A child travelling with one parent generally needs documented consent from the other, in a form that will be accepted both at departure and on arrival.
Requirements vary by nationality and by airline, and a letter that satisfies one may not satisfy the other. Check this months ahead with a lawyer in your own country. It is a legal question at home rather than an Indonesian one, and it cannot be fixed at the airport.
The island's schools sit in a small number of corridors, so the choice of school narrows the housing search before it begins. In island traffic twenty kilometres can be an hour, and that drive happens twice a day.

Rent before buying, and take a lease long enough to survive a change of plan. Families who buy in the first months usually buy near the wrong school.
A year gives you time to test the commute, the community and whether the school suits the child. The first lease should not be a three-year commitment, because the ability to move when the school changes is part of the insurance against a bad first choice.

With children this stops being theoretical within the first month. Fevers, stomach upsets, cuts and vaccinations are routine, and knowing where to go should not be figured out at nine in the evening.
Establish which clinic handles paediatrics near your address, which hospital takes anything serious, and whether your insurer settles directly with it. The picture of healthcare, hospitals and costs on the island belongs on the checklist alongside the school. Direct billing matters more with children than without, because decisions get made at night and quickly.
Schools ask for vaccination records, and so do clinics when a child first registers. A translated, complete file saves repeated appointments.
Discuss the move with your paediatrician at home before leaving. Ask what is recommended for the region, what your child is due for, and get everything documented in a form that travels. Bring a written summary of any ongoing condition, allergy or medication, including the generic drug names rather than the brands you buy at home.
Shipping costs more than most families expect and delivers later. The rule is simple: bring what is hard to replace and buy what is not. In practice that divides like this:
Children settle at different speeds and rarely on the schedule parents assume. Younger ones usually adapt within a term. Teenagers, who left a formed social circle behind, often take longer and mind more.
The practical part is worth arranging in advance: activities outside school, a way to keep contact with friends at home, and a routine that starts quickly. Everyone is tired, and an empty week is more useful than an itinerary.
Bali runs on scooters, and a family cannot. That single fact reshapes the budget and the choice of area more than most people expect before arriving.
A car, a driver or a school bus becomes a fixed monthly cost rather than an occasional one. Work out the transport arrangement before choosing the house, because a cheaper property that requires two daily drives is not cheaper.

Some families leave within a year, and planning for that possibility costs nothing while ignoring it is expensive. It is not pessimism, it is the same logic as renting before buying.
Keep the exit cheap for the first year: a lease you can end, no purchase, school records you can obtain quickly, and documents kept together. Families who arranged this and stayed lost nothing. Families who did not and left lost a great deal.
When should we start the process?
Six to twelve months before the school year you are aiming at. Document legalisation at home and school admissions both run on their own timetables, and neither can be accelerated once started.
Can children study on a visit permit?
Not at schools with formal status, which report on their students. The child normally needs their own stay permission dependent on a sponsored parent, which is why the adult's status has to be settled first.
Which area suits families best?
The one within a reasonable drive of the school you chose. That is not evasion — school choice narrows the map so much that starting from the area produces a move within a year.
How long does adaptation take?
A term for younger children, longer for teenagers. The reliable predictor is whether the child has found something outside school, so arranging one activity in the first weeks is worth more than several later.
Should we ship our furniture?
Usually not. Furniture is cheap locally and shipping is slow and costly. Bring documents, medicines, specialist items and the things a child will miss. Buy the rest after you arrive.
